Kollavarsham, The Malayalam Calender

The Malayalam Era began in the year 825 AD and was named as Kollavarsham.  This is a sidereal Calender which is calculated as per the movement of the particular star  from a given observation point some what similar to the method followed by sun dials.

There are theories about who founded the calender, there is one side which says that Uday Marthandavarama of the Venad Kingdom did it  and another side, stands by the well known Philosopher of India, Adi Shankaracharya.

It could also have been just a derivation of the Saptarishi Era but all of them concur with the idea that the calender started off with the natural calamity That occurred during the period and the city was destroyed on the Malabar Coast.  Later the city was reconstructed and the Calender Kollavarsham seems to have started at the same time.
