This is the favourite picnic and the relaxing spot of the tourists as well as the locals. Thangassery Beach is located at about 5 kilometers from the Kollam and is easily accessible from all parts of India.
About Thangassery Lighthouse in Kollam Town
There is a lighthouse at Thangassery, about 144 feet tall, which is a centre of attraction to the tourists coming into the city of Kollam in Kerala. The Lighthouse has been built in the year 1902 . Thangassery was a part of the Portuguese colony at first, then became a dutch colony and finally went to the British hands. You can see some beautifully constructed churches built in the 18th century at Thangassery.
The Thangassery Lighthouse is open from 5.30 to 7.30 pm in the evening when people can climb up and have a look. There is a fort which is one of the tourist attractions here and you can see some other forts established by Dutch and the Portuguese are there nearby which are in ruins.
How to reach Thangassery Beach in Kollam
Kollam is a city well connected with different parts of the state as well as the neighbouring state Tamilnadu. Thiruvananthapuram is the nearest airport and is about 71 kilometers away from Thangassery Beach.
The railway station is about 5 kilometers from the Thangassery Beach and is well connected by Road to the rest of the places in the Kollam town and other cities in Kerala.
Road network in Kerala has always been good and you can find KSRTC buses plying in all routes of Kerala along with private buses like Volvo, Sleeper and Semi sleeper buses which travel long distances. From cities like Bangalore, Chennai, Coimbatore, Mangalore and Hyderabad etc you can travel by buses to Kollam and Thiruvanathapuram. But Travelling by rail is always better and cheaper in India.
