Mattupetty, a beautiful dam in Kerala


Mattupetty is a storage masonry dam which was built in the Western ghats of Kerala to conserve water for hydro electricity power. Mattupetty is located at about 13 kilometers from Munnar and is not very far from the Anamudi Lake. Mattupettyis situated at an altitude of 1700 meters above sea level and is an enchanting place for picnics and excursions. 
 
Mattupetty is known for its highly specialized dairy farming, the Indo Swiss Livestock Project. There are more than a 100 varieties of cattle reared here and the visitors to the farm are allowed to visit only three out of the 11 cattle sheds present there. 
Timings for the visits are 9 am - 11 am and 2 pm - 5.30 pm 
Entrance Fee - Rs 5 per person

Mattupetty lake and Dam are located at a short distance from the Dairy farm. Both the Lake and the Dam are beautiful spot for picnics and are frequented regularly by the locales as well as tourists . DTPC Idukki has provided boating facilities for hire, in the Mattupetty Dam, like Speed launch, slow speedboat and motorboats etc

Kundala Lake and the sprawling tea plantations are also located nearby. It will be a little difficult to get to the different parts for sight seeing in Munnar. Car rentals, taxis and auto rickshaws are available. State transport buses will the easiest of all to travel from place to place in Munnar

How to Reach Mattupetty?
Kochi is the nearest airport as well as the railway station and is about 110 kilometers from Munnar. 
Ernakulam railway station is the nearest station at about 130 kilometers away 
By Road it is just about 13 kilometers from Munnar.
