Arakkalkettu / Arakkal Palace

The Arakkalkettu / Arakkal Palace is the residence of the Arakkal Ali Rajas, They were the kings who ruled parts of the coast and Lakshadweep island. The palace is located at Ayikkara, next to the Kannur City Moideen Masjid, which is about 3 kilometers from the town of Kannur. This Arakkal Royal family has had a prominent role in the history of the Malabar province of South India,

Arakkal family was the only muslim royal family in the state of Kerala in South India, The durbar hall of the Arakkalkettu / Arakkal Palace has been converted in to a museum and dedicated to the Arakkal Royal family.  Arakkal Museum showcases the history of their rule and the regional influence of the Arakkal 'Rajas' (male rulers). The female rulers were called 'Beevis' in their time of authority.

The exhibits which are show cased in the durbar hall consists of old records, maps and drawings of surveys and many other manuscripts. These records will throw light on the maritime activities of the family, the way they conducted their trade and their relationship with the European colonial powers, who were trying to put a foot in the soil.

The 2 century old Arakkal palace was renovated by the Government of India and dedicated to the nation in 2005, The property is still with the Arakkal family and is looked after by their family trust. A nominal entry fee is being charged by the Arakkal family trust from visitors to the museum.

How to Reach Arakkal Museum?
If you are travelling by air, Kozhikode International airport is the nearest one and is well connected to neighbouring cities.  Dubai, Muscat, Singapore are also connected to Kozhikode airport with direct flights.
Kannur is well connected by rail and road and so it is easily accessible from any part of India.

Moppila Bay, a natural harbour in Kannur, Kerala

Moppila Bay is a natural fishing harbour  which is located near the St Angelo's Fort at Ayikkara.
Ayikkara is a small village situated in the  Kannur District of the Kerala state.

There is a sea wall erected to a huge height to separate the rough sea and the inland water sources of the St Angelo Fort. In this natural harbour, mechanized boats and other country crafts can enter and anchor safely.
 St Angelo Fort was built by the first viceroy of the Portuguese during the early 16th century. Later in the 17th century Dutch invaded the fort and captured it. Later they sold the fort to the Arakkal kingdom toll the British forces subdued the dutch and took over the St Angelo Fort. They had it till India got her independence.

On the other side of the Moppila Bay, you can see the Arakkal Palace which at present is the Arakkal Museum.  The Museum is dedicated to the Arakkal family which were the only muslim dynasty rulers of the state.

The places to visit in and around Moppila bay are  St. Angelo Fort, Arakkal Museum,  Baby Beach, Azhikkal Ferry, Peralassery Subrahmanya Swami Kshetram,  Kannur City Center, The Sea View Park,  Vasmaya Amusement Park, Cannanore Lighthouse, AnjarakandyParassinikadavu Sree Muthappan  as well as the new addition Indian Naval Academy.

How to reach Moppila Bay?
The nearest airport is Kozhikode and the nearest railway station is Kannur. Kannur is well connected by railways and roadways to the neighbouring cities and towns.
If you planning to travel by air You can reach the Kozhikode international airport at Karipur. You can get local buses running from Kozhikode to Kannur which ply regularly.
You can also get cabs from the airport to kannur  and then to Ayikkara.

Aralam Wild life Sanctuary

Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary is located  at the northernmost parts of the protected area of the state of  Kerala, is near to the Aralam, Kelakamand Kottiyur revenue villages of the south eastern parts of the Kannur district. Aralam Wildlife sanctuary is located in the north western slopes of the westernghats  which is adjacent to the forests of Coorg / Kodagu of the state of Karnataka.  Aralam Wildlife sanctuary has an area of 55 square kilometers.

Climate at Aralam Wildlife National Park
The average rainfall at the sanctuary is about 4000 mm  and the humidity is from 60 - 100%
Chennakannipuzha is the watersource for the wildlife sanctuary
A network of small streamlets joins Cheenkannipuzha at different points  including the chavachithode in the eastern boundary of the Sanctuary, since the sanctuary exhibits slope from east to west. Narikadavuthodu, Kurukkathodu and Meenmuttithodu  which form in the upper reaches  also flow southwards and joins Cheenkannipuzha.
terrain is rugged in most of the places  with the altitude ranging from 60 to 1489 meters above sea level which suggests hilly terrain and steep slopes.

How to reach the Aralam National Wildlife Park
The nearest town is Iritty which is 20 km away from the sanctuary  and that is the place where the wildlife Warden’s office is situated.
Nearest Railway Station is Thalassery and is located  at a distance of 70kilometers and the nearest airport is Kozhikode karipur international airport, which is 150 kms away.
 The Aralam National Wildlife Park  is accessible by road from Thalassery, Kannur, Wayanad and Virajpet.
 The Assistant Wild life warden's office functions at Valayamchal on the south west corner of the sanctuary. As the bitumen work of road from Odanthodu to Valayamchal was completed visitors can come by any type of vehicle upto the entrance of the sanctuary.
The Nearest fuel filling station is at Iritty where accommodation, medical, communication, taxies etc are available.
