Places to Visit in Alappuzha


Krishnapuram Palace of Alappuzha 
Krishnapuram Palace, which was built by the travancore King Marthanda varma in the 18th century, is the oldest palace. This Krishnapuram Palace is a double storied building  which has the typical characteristics of the Kerala Architecture , like gabled roofs, dormar windows and narrow corridors. 

Gajendra Moksham , the largest mural painting of  Kerala is placed in this palace measuring about 14 feet by 11 feet and is at the western end of the ground floor. This is just at a walking distance from the Palace Pool. Other than these  there is also a museum of rare and antique sculptures, bronzes and paintings. .  

This Krishnapuram palace is located at about 47 kilometers from the town of Alappuzha on the route to Kollam. The Krishnapuram palace is easily accessible from Kollam as well as Alappuzha. 

Pathiramanal Islands of Alappuzha
Pathiramanal  meaning the sands of the midnight  is an island in the backwaters of Alappuzha near Kumarakom. Pathiramanal Island is located in the Vembanad lake and is accessible only by Boat. You can reach easily from Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary. 
This Island is located at about an hour and a half trip by the motor boat or about half an hour trip by the speed boat from the Boat jetty of Alappuzha town. You can also take the boats plying in the Kumarakom, Muhamma route to reach the island.

The Pathiramanal island is home to 91 species of local birds and 50 species of  migratory birds. You can many varieties like Pintail Ducks, Indian Shag, Common Teal, Night Heron, Cormorant, Darter, Little Egret,   Purple Heron, Pheasant-tailed and Bronze-winged Jacanas, Cattle Egret, gulls,  large egrets, Intermediate Egret,  Indian Pond Heron, terns, Stork-billed Kingfisher, Watercock, Whistling Duck, Cotton Pygmy-Goose, Little Cormorant and Whiskered Tern in the island. 

Karumadi of  Alappuzha
 Karumadi Kuttan is a 11th century statue of Buddha located at about 3 kilometers away from Ambalapuzha.  This statue is protected by the state arcaeological Department. Karumadi has been credited with too many healing powers and is looked at with affection by the locals of the area.  There are many fascinating legends which are associated with this Karumadi kuttan, the Buddha statue.
